Workshop: (Re)acting to violence and discrimination in the performing arts (circus, dance, theatre)

From January 31st to February 2nd 2025, Reboot and the Toamême circus school organized a workshop and shared best practices in Schwarzsee, in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.

The workshop focused on the impact of social constructs, gendered representations, and stereotypes in the performing arts. As in other areas of social and cultural life, the field of performing arts is not immune to violent, discriminatory, and oppressive behavior. The discussions highlighted the lasting consequences of these dynamics on their victims, affecting physical and mental well-being as well as educational and professional trajectories.

The workshop focused specifically on how artistic practices are taught, and the conditions under which violence occurs. The discussions provided an opportunity to explore strategies for promoting more inclusive and respectful learning environments by rethinking teaching methods and institutions in the performing arts.
